Causes of androgenic alopecia

The cause of androgenetic alopecia is the increased influence of male sex hormones on the hair follicles. And this condition can be observed both at elevated levels of hormones in the blood, and at normal levels, when the skin is more active enzyme that converts inactive hormones into the active form. Elevated hormone levels can be seen in a variety of hormonal disorders, adrenal tumors, etc. In women, a relative increase in male sex hormones can be observed with a decrease in the level of female sex hormones, in some gynecological diseases, such as polycystic ovarian disease. The activity in the skin of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which plays a key role in the conversion of male sex hormones into the active form, is mainly due to heredity.

Symptoms of androgenetic alopecia

In androgenetic alopecia, there is diffuse hair loss predominantly in the frontal-parietal region. In men, sometimes there may be characteristic baldness on the top of the head with a wreath of hair on the temples and nape of the neck. In women, even with severe disease, hair remains on the entire surface of the head, but in the frontoparietal zone their density per unit area is much lower.

Diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia

To determine the presence of androgenetic alopecia, it is necessary to exclude endocrine pathology, diseases of the adrenal glands, pituitary gland, ovaries. A modern method of diagnosing baldness is phototrichoscopy. The method allows you to accurately determine the parameters of hair growth, and is indispensable for assessing the form of the disease, the degree of activity and severity of the process, which significantly affects the choice of treatment. If androgenic alopecia is suspected, phototrichoscopy is performed in two areas: frontoparietal and occipitotemporal. Striking differences in the amount of hair in these areas will speak in favor of androgenetic alopecia.

Treatment of androgenic alopecia.

The treatment of androgenetic alopecia is very individualized and begins with the selection of proper scalp and hair care. If necessary, correction of the hormonal background is carried out (for example, if indicated, women are prescribed contraceptives to normalize the cycle). The main treatment is the external application of agents that block the action of sex hormones on the hair follicle, or reduce the activity of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. These remedies act only locally, are not absorbed into the blood and do not change the hormonal background of the patient. The positive effect is usually noticeable after the first month of treatment.
